Honda Civic three-door unveiled

Type-R details also emerge
In keeping with the current tradition of robbing motor show debutants of any real surprise factor, Honda has lifted the lid on the new three-door Civic. Scheduled to be unveiled at the British International Motor Show next month, the new model gets a sportier chassis than its five-door sibling and goes on sale in January 2007. Meanwhile, Honda has also dished out preliminary tech specs for the Civic Type-R…
More on that in moment. First, a few more specifics on the boggo three-door model. Chassis-wise, Honda has both widened the car’s rear track by 20mm to improve stability and retuned the spring and damper rates for a more responsive drive. Just two engines will be on offer at launch – a 1.8-litre VTEC petrol lump and 2.2-litre oil burner. Both units crank out 138bhp and are backed by a six-speed manual box. The VTEC unit is also available with Honda’s i-SHIFT robot box. 17-inch alloys are standard across the range.
But what of the much anticipated Civic Type-R? Well, putting aside the usual bland PR bilge regarding “intuitive handling” and “responsive steering,” there are two points worth mentioning. Power will remain pegged at 197bhp, as per the outgoing model, and Honda has worked hard to improve in-cabin refinement. Neither of which are necessarily what head-banging Type-R enthusiasts would necessarily want to hear. The Civic Type-R goes on sale March 2007. Prices for the entire Civic three-door range are TBC.
