Honda reconsiders S2000 replacement?

Rear-drive roadster reborn
The S2000 is dead. Long live the S2000. So says no less an august publication than the UK’s Autocar Magazine. This week, Autocar reports that Honda has recently hatched plans to launch a replacement for the six-year-old roadster. The magazine reckons that until recently the Japanese outfit had no plans to replace the S2000. There’s just one problem with this otherwise compelling story – it’s not news. Honda’s chairman of research and development, Motoatsu Shiraishi, went on the record back in October last year, as we reported, promising replacements for both the S2000 and the NSX…
All of which hardly squares with Autocar’s claims that the new S2000 has yet to be given the green light. Whatever, Autocar suggests two options are on the table for the reborn S2000 - a quick and dirty rehash of the current car or an all-new vehicle and speculates that the later wouldn’t be ready until 2010-11. However, given Mr. Shiraishi’s comments last year, we suspect the new S2000 will appear sooner than that – whatever shape the car takes.
