Hot Zafira bags ‘Ring record

Quickest van on the planet?
Eight minutes, 54.38 seconds. That’s how long it took former Le Mans
winner Manuel Reuter to drag the Opel Zafira OPC (a.k.a. the Vauxhall
Zafira VXR in Blighty) around the infamous Nurburgring Nordschleife
track in Germany. Which makes it the quickest people carrier in town.
For your reference, that’s about the same as John Surtees managed in a
Cooper Maserati, back in 1966 (oh, OK, theNordschleife was a couple of Ks longer in those days, but let’s not allow facts to get in the way of a good segway).
It’s also just five seconds off the best ‘Ring racing efforts of a supercharged 400bhp Jaguar XKR or a first generation 225bhp Audi TT. And just one second shy of the latest Golf GTI. Not bad for a compact people carrier derived from a mass market hatchback. Though with 237bhp on tap from a four-pot turbo lump, it’s perhaps no less than you’d expect.
Indeed, Reuter himself had this to say of the car’s ‘Ring performance:
“In every phase, this car shows that it received its fine tuning on the most demanding circuits in the world. The feel of the Zafira OPC is just fantastic.”
Heart-warming stuff from a man on the pay roll. Anyway, for those who care, the Zafira OPC/VXR hits 62mph in 7.8 seconds, will soldier on to a Vmax of 144mph and is yours for £22,145. Of course, for that sort of money you could pick up a nearly-new bog standard Zafira and still have enough change left over for a spotless BMW E36 BMW M3. But perhaps that’s not the point.
