Javan R1: Strathcarron reborn

Honda power for born-again lightweight sportser
If the sudden onslaught of French-stylee futuristic conceptualisation is making you a little homesick, (you’d think there’s an impending motor show in Paris or something), check out this vision of the track-attack future from Javan Sports Cars, resurrected from the bygone Strathcarron project…

When Strathcarron went pop in 2001, scale model manufacturer Javan Smith bought the tooling for the car, then painstakingly executed a complex battery of modifications and improvements, from the chassis up. The silhouette might resemble the Strathcarron, but the Helston-in-Cornwall constructed Javan R1 also reflects the engineering purity shot through the class-defining, Norfolk-built Elise. The aft coachwork in particular, stretched over the epoxy-bonded aluminium honeycomb chassis, shows impressive depth of design.
On paper, the R1 looks like it should out point ‘n’ shoot the Elise. A mid-mounted 2.0-litre Honda i-VTEC lump, spewing out 220bhp, provides the firepower to propel the flyweight mass of 670kg. Big league oomph?Oh yes, try 155mph and the ton in 9.8, with 60mph dispatched in a manic 3.6 seconds. That’s quick enough most, no doubt, but acceleration junkies take note: An even more track-focused version, pared down to the tune of a further 40kg, is planned. But that’s not all. Both launch control and supercharging are in development. The latter is already tried and tested - a supercharged Honda installation immodestly resides under the intestinal lattice of the Ariel Atom. Good luck resisting the urge to select that option come purchase time.

With crosshairs set on the hardcore track-day orientated market, the R1 is yours for £30,139. Not cheap, but console yourself with the knowledge that it will be as rare as a motorshow devoid of batty hybrid concepts. A mere one-a-month will trickle out from the factory in Cornwall.
P.S. Note to Javan Sports Cars: Sort out the PR images boys, they’re tiny!
