Bargain basement Cayenne crusher
Love ‘em or loathe ‘em, SUVs with monster motors are increasingly popular with prosperous punters. So, it was surely only a matter of time before Chrysler’s 4x4 subsidiary Jeep got the HEMI-branded 6.1-litre V8 treatment. Today, Chrysler UK boss Peter Lambert duly announced theHEMI-powered Grand Cherokee SRT-8. The order books are already open and above all else Jeep wants you to fathom the following factoids: The SRT-8 is both quicker and massively cheaper than a Porsche Cayenne Turbo…

The SRT-8’s pushrod V8 cranks out a satisfyingly symmetrical 420bhp and 420lb/ft, enough for a zero to 62mph in five seconds dead and a top whack of 152mph. In short, it’s by far the quickest Jeep ever made.

For now, Jeep has released but one image of the new SRT-8. So we give you this, the virtually identical US-market SRT-8 which went on sale Stateside last year
Unsurprisingly, Jeep emphasises that the SRT-8 isn’t built for mud plugging shenanigans, but rather for taking on tarmac-coated twisties. The standard Grand Cherokee’s four-wheel drive system remains, but with a tweaked default torque split that sends just 10 per cent of the twisting action to the front wheels in normal conditions. However, fully 100 per cent of torque can be pumped to either axle depending on available grip. Other chassis mods include Brembo brakes, Bilstein dampers and 25mm chopped from the ute’s ride height. A complete sounding package, then. Of course, if you really enjoy pressing on, the sensible advice is obviously no touchy the SRT-8. But then this sort of barge ultimately isn’t aimed at bona fide driving enthusiasts.

6.1 litres. 420bhp. And absolutely, positively no respect for the environment. American motoring at its finest
Anywho, a new front bumper claimed to reduce drag and lift as well as improving cooling to the engine bay, a big bore exhaust and 20-inch five-spoke rims round out the SRT-8’s feature set. Prices kick off at £40,585. And for the record, Porker’s Cayenne Turbo is yours from £70,870, hits 60mph in 5.6 seconds and muscles on to 165mph. Pay money. Take choice. Mooch around in an offensively over-powered SUV. Huzzah.

Pimping pipes, Nascar tunes. Yum.
