Lambo preps lightweight Murcielago

Less weight. More power. Same old.

The Superleggera lightweight Gallardo experiment has been a winner for Lamborghini. The rave reviews and refreshed interest in what is a rather mature product range are exactly what the doctor ordered. With that in mind, it’s no surprise to find that Lambo is tooling up to give the big, bad Murcielago the Superleggera treatment…

Following recent spy snaps of a be-winged Murcie pumping in laps at ye olde Nurburging, Pistonheads.com claims to have confirmed the existence of the project with Lamborghini insiders.

Precise specifications remain unknown, but expect the usual stripped-out interior, lightweight panels, chassis tweaks and a few more ponies. The current flagship of the Murcielago range, the LP640 cranks out 631bhp, so a figure somewhere north of 650 nags for the Superleggera looks like a safe bet.

As for whether this most uber of Murcielago’s will stick with all-wheel-drive or make the move to an arguably sportier rear-wheel setup is still up in the air. However, when discussing the Gallardo Superleggera, Lambo head honcho Stephan Winklemann let it be known that 4WD was a central part of the modern day Lambo experience.

No official word on UK pricing and availability, but sales are expected to kick off early next year.
