SUV and reborn Espada get the chop
Trust UK rag AutoExpress to fan the flames of speculation regarding the future of Lamborghini. Following recent rumours that parent company VW is considering offloading the Italian supercar outfit comes news that Lamborghini has shelved plans for a pair of new models - a reborn LM 002 off-roader and a spiritual successor to the Espada…
Speaking to AutoExpress, Lambo head honcho Stephan Winklemann spake thusly: “I’m a fan of SUVs, but making one isn’t on the radar for this decade. We’re such a small company, we couldn’t do one on our own. Still, it would make more sense for us to do one of those than a four-seater.”

Reborn Espada above, new age LM002 below. Neither now destined for production
So, is this the beginning of the end for Lambo? Or simply a sensible refocusing on what the company does best, namely low-slung supercars. Well, the word from Winklemann is that Lamborghini will concentrate on pumping out derivatives of the Murcielago and Gallardo product lines, including models with rear-wheel drive and lower kerb weights. “I believe the future of this firm lies in increasing our cars’ power-to-weight ratio rather than outright strength.” We’ll take a light weight, rear-drive Gallardo over a reborm LM002 any day.
