Lancia pulls plug on Fulvietta coupé

Italian car company that can’t build cars…
Woe is Newswheel. UK rag Autocar reports that Lancia has scrapped plans to knock up a series production version of the impeccably pretty Fulvietta concept. First shown back in 2003, the Fulvietta concept was inspired by the 1960s Lancia Fulvia coupé and based on Fiat Barchetta oily bits. Unsurprisingly, the Barchetta’s ancient underpinnings have been deemed unlikely to meet modern safety requirements. And the crumbling Fiat empire does not have an alternative platfrom available…
According to Fiat design supremo Frank Stephenson, the Fulvietta concept “doesn’t work on any platform [Fiat has] today.” In other words, the Italian outfit literally lacks the ability to build the Fulvietta, despite the overwhelmingly positive reception the concept recieved. That’s a pretty rum situation for a once proud automaker. As recently as September this year, the Fulvietta was expected to spearhead Lancia’s return to the UK market.
