Lancia wheels out Delta HPE concept at Venice film festival

A thinly disguised production car?
The Delta HPE concept car made its world debut at the Venice film festival yesterday. According to Lancia, the concept is a modern interpretation of the Beta HPE coupe-come-shooting-brake from the late '70s. And it may well be. But it’s also extremely similar in overall proportions to any number of MPV-influenced mono-box hatchbacks you care to mention…

Still, there’s no doubting it’s a spacious machine with a 2.7m wheelbase and measuring 4.5m in overall length. Predictably, the concept car ticks the usual electrickery and infotainment checkboxes including MP3 playback support, Fiat’s Blue&Me system incorporating Bluetooth and USB connectivity for the easy transfer of music files and electronic dampers. Engine-wise, the concept is designed to support a wide range of turbocharged petrol and oil burning lumps ranging from 120bhp to 200bhp.

Just how close the upcoming production Delta will be to this concept isn’t known. But a close look at these PR images reveals a number of familiar design compromises often seen on production vehicles but rarely needed for pure show cars including slightly recessed, rather than completely flush, side windows along with sensible shutlines for the doors, wings and bumpers. As with the Volvo C30 Coupe design concept, it’s just possible you’re looking at a very mildly tarted up version of the real series-production deal.
There’s no official word as yet on pricing, launch dates or possible UK availability.
