London show shindig for M6 Convertible

BMW is bonkers for Blighty
To a list of world debuts that already includes the Jag XKR, Civic three-door and Freelander 2 may we add BMW’s M6 Convertible. Granted, the British International Motor Show won’t be worrying the organisers of the Geneva and Frankfurt shindigs. But for an event that was near-as-dammit dead just a few years ago, the London show is looking distinctly healthy. Indeed, the M6’s British blow off is a first for any BMW…
Powered by the same award-winning 5.0-litre 507bhp V10 masterpiece as found in both the hardtop M6 and four-door M5, the new M6 Convertible is unlikely to deliver any technical surprises. Still, the claimed zero-to-62mph sprint of 4.8 clicks and an electronically limited top whack of 155mph (BMW rather unhelpfully suggests the car would be capable of 200mph if unrestricted) is none too shabby. But we’re slightly less impressed by BMW’s boasts of 18.6mpg for the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 366g/km. That might be a cut above many other planet-eating supercars. But it ain’t exactly going to win BMW friends with the environmental lobby. Best to keep these things to ourselves, um-kay?
Whatever, the remainder of the M6’s tech specs are par for the M6 coupe course. So, that’s another appearance of BMW’s love-it-or-loathe-it clutch-roasting SMG robot gearbox along with a number of more unambiguously desirable high performance accoutrements including the fancy Variable M Differential and M Sport-calibrated DSC stability control system. As with the M6 coupe, BMW has made a stab at keeping the car’s kerb weight from ballooning entirely out of control courtesy of thermoplastic front wings and carbon fibre for the front and rear bumpers. Nevertheless, this hasn’t prevented this open-top beast from breaching the two-tonne barrier. The final figure is a distinctly portly 2,005kg.
Rounding out the feature list are a set of 19-inch rims - 255/40 boots up front and 285/35 rubber wrapped around the rear wheels - and the triple-layered hood from the plain-vanilla 6 Series cabrio, complete with flying buttress-alike roof extensions. An imposing all-round package, if hardly a conventional beauty.
The M6 Convertible goes on sale in September. BMW will release further details and pricing info closer to the July 18th unveiling date.
