Merc R-Class bombs in the US

$5,000 off and still no buyers?
Mercedes' R-Class SUV/MPV crossover has only been on sale for months.
But it’s quickly heading for poo-creek-but-no-paddle status. Far from
creating a lucrative new model niche, disappointing sales in the US
have forced parent company DaimlerChrysler to offer dealers $5,000
incentives to shift the apparently unwanted barge. Making matters
worse, the car is reported to have been plagued by technical issues…
In its first three months on sale in the US, the R-Class notched up 4,959 sales and is currently finding new homes at around half the rate of the latest ML model. A recall earlier this month involved repairs to electrical faults and a problem with the rear seat belts.
Speaking to MSN money, a Mercedes-Benz operative put a brave face on the situation. “You have got a vehicle that is a whole new segment not only for us but for consumers as well,” quothe the drone. "We are totally convinced that once it has recognition in the marketplace, it is a package that none of the competitors offer. We just need to get people in the car to experience it."
Still, even if the R totally bombs, it’s thought the financial fall-out won’t be too severe. MB’s Tuscaloosa, Alabama production facility, which the R shares with the new ML and G-Class vehicles, is capable of rapidly switching capacity between the three model lines according to demand.
