Drops new AMG lump into ML and R Class
How to drop a big, V8-powered bomb on the Chicago auto show? Simply bolt a 6.3-litre, 510bhp V8 into a couple of existing models. M-B is preparing to wheel out the R63 and ML63 AMG as the Chicago show kicks off.
On paper, AMG’s monumental new V8 is a done deal. As we’ve already reported, it’s a ground-up design unique to AMG and not based on any existing M-B unit. But that knowledge is likely poor preparation for the experience of hitting 60mph in five seconds flat in a motor as massive as the R63 AMG.

Needless to say, the R63 is bursting with M-B’s fanciest new kit including the 7G seven-speed slushbox, AIRMATIC suspension and active dampers. As with other members of the crossover R-Class, the R63 packs a four-wheel drive transmission with a 40:60 torque ratio, front to rear.

We’re also happy to give credit to M-B for pulling off the difficult trick of making 20-inch wheels look ordinary. But don’t despair – AMG has produced its first ever set of 21-inch plates available as an optional extra. Them there’s some big wheel arches. Also worth noting is the transmission control layout. Like the new S-Class, it’s a steering column-mounted affair.
As for the ML63, we’ve no firm tech specs, other than that 510bhp AMG unit. But we’ll assume the 7G box and robotised chassis will be making an appearance, too. We’ll update with prices and on-sale dates as we get ‘em.
