Evo go again

The first official images and details of Mitsubishi’s latest Lancer saloon have been released. The new model, which is based on a revamped platform that also underpins the Outlander ute and will lend its core architecture and bodyshell to the upcoming Evo X, will be wheeled out at the Detroit motor show early next year…

Size-wise, the new Lancer is longer of wheelbase and wider of track compared with the outgoing Lancer bargette. However, more compact overhangs translate into a slightly shorter overall length. The standard powerplant sticks with the Lancer’s tried and tested 2.0-litre four-pot arrangement, albeit courtesy of a redesigned unit offering 152bhp in naturally-aspirated trim. Transmission is via a manual five-cog box or optionally a CVT auto.

There’s no news yet regarding the precise specification of the obligatory batshit, turbocharged Evo model. However, Mitsubishi is also thought to be working on a cheaper, less extreme performance variant priced to take on Subaru’s Impreza WRX.

Add the styling cues of the Evo X concept of 2005 (above) to the hum drum lines of the new Lancer and you’ll get a pretty good idea of what the real Evo X production car will look like when it appears - probably late next year or early 2008

US sales of the new Lancer kick off in early 2007. No word to date regarding UK sales. Watch this space…
