MGs to be manufactured at three sites across the globe
Last week, we reported that Nanjing Automobile will resume production of the MG TF roadster at MG Rover’s currently idling Longbridge facility. Now the Chinese motor manufacturer has officially announced plans to crank out hardtop MG TF coupes from a new plant in Oklahoma, USA.
During a press conference in Oklahoma yesterday, Nanjing said a new factory in the town of Armore with around 500 employees will knock out redesigned MG TF coupes. Nanjing also revealed that its research and development centre will be based in Oklahoma and not at Longbridge as had been hoped. It’s thought that generous government grants are providing significant slice of the $2 billion funding for the project.
Nanjing’s plans to produce the TF roadster in Blighty are apparently not effected by this announcement. Likewise, the company’s intentions to build three MG saloon models at a plant in China. But yesterday’s announcement certainly shifts the balnce of power away from Longbridge.
Nanjing reckons production at its new US facility will kick off in autumn 2008.
