New CR-V goes legit

After last month’s picture leakage comes the official outpouring of images and tech specs for the new Honda CR-V. The Japanese outfit reckons the refreshed compact SUV offers a driving experience as good as a D-sector saloon car as well as improved off-road capabilities…
Heading up the chassis tweaks is a centre of gravity lowered by 35mm, in part thanks to a wider stance to the tune of 30mm. Add in a number of detail mods to the suspension geometry and steering and you have a recipe for what Honda claims is significantly enhanced handling characteristics. Off-road ability is also said to be improved courtesy of a revised Real Time 4WD system which doles out torque according to available traction. 17 and 18-inch rims are standard, while 19s are optional.
As for safety, Honda is predicting a headline five-star rating for passenger protection, four stars for child protection and just three for poor old pedestrians (the latter would actually be something of an achievement for an SUV).
Other technical highlights include radar-assisted adaptive cruise control, a battery of airbags, active/directional front lighting and a full-on electronic stability system that can adapt to trailer loading. With that in mind, towing capacity on the diesel-powered model rises from 1,500kg to 2,000kg.
But what of the engine line up? Well, if you don’t like 2.0-litre(ish) four-pot power, no touchy the new CR-V. For the UK, the only options are a 148bhp petrol 2.0-litre lump and 138bhp 2.2-litre blown oil burner. Suffice to say its unlikely either model will deliver truly effortless performance.
The new CR-V will receive its worldwide debut at the Paris motor show at the end of the month. Honda has not announced UK pricing or on-sale dates. Over and out.
