Newswheel @ the Paris show: Chinese car companies you ain’t never heard of

Land, wind and walls
Thought that chintzy Chinese companies with faintly comical
brand names were the preserve of £25 DVD players with piracy-friendly DivX
support? Well, think again. At the Paris
show, the Chinese are out in force and some of their products look pretty damn
plausible…

The Great Wall Hover is powered by a 2.4-litre Mitsubishi
four-pot (click for the bigger picture)
Indeed, the quality of Chinese output, superficially at
least, appears to be improving rapidly. Granted, our far eastern friends are
yet to produce a single motor car that could honestly be described as
desirable. But none of the vehicles on Landwind or Great Wall’s show
stands (don’t say you haven’t heard of them…) are in the least bit embarrassing.
With the right pricing, both Landwind’s compact seven seat Fashion MPV and
Great Wall’s Mitsubishi-powered Hover ute would happily find homes in the UK.
Although a Dutch importer is currently supplying Landwind’s rather agricultural SUVs to the UK, it’s not currently known if the Fashion will make it to this green and pleasant land. As for the Great Wall Hover, it’s due to go on sale in Europe in 2008.
