Newswheel @ the Paris show: The good, the bad and the downright fugly. Part 1

Gay Paris
In which Newswheel crosses paths with un grand fromage, spares a thought for the Focus cab, lifts the lid on industrial espionage, gives Jag a grilling and, well, some other stuff…
Even the day-glo orange paint can’t hide the fundamental anonymity of the new S3. Understatement is all very well, but Audi may well have gone too far with its latest hot hatch.
Motorshows aren’t just the first chance for motoring hacks and car
fanatics to grab a glimpse of new metal. They also provide car
companies with their first opportunity to get down and dirty with the
opposition. Think swarms of Japanese engineers gagging to conduct a
tear down and senior suits with checklists and you’ll get the idea.

Happy days: King Carlos shares a joke. Not.
Jag’s XK has enjoyed some extremely positive press in the UK. But with familiarity comes the sneaking feeling that, design-wise, the car would look equally as happy with a Mercury badge and a $25,000 Stateside sticker price. The mesh grille on the XKR is particularly chintzy.
The Focus cab was a shiny new show star in Geneva this Spring. Fast forward a few months and observe the hollow wind and tumble weeds blowing past…
