Nissan 350Z: upgrades

More power for classy coupe
Here’s one we missed last week. Nissan has announced a package of upgrades for the 2006 350Z. Both the coupe and roadster variants of the popular Japanese sportster will hum to the tune of 20 extra horsepower, matching the limited edition Anniversary model launched earlier this year.

Spot the difference: the 2006 Nissan 350Z
The list of engine tweaks includes a revised inlet manifold, new pistons, reprofiled camshafts, a tweaked timing chain and an uprated oil pump. The general aim is a freer breathing, higher revving engine. The 3.5-litre V6 now has a peak power output of 300bhp, while maximum torque is down a whiff at 260lb/ft. However, Nissan claims the engine has a flatter torque curve and delivers more torque at high revs. It’s also now good for the tough Euro IV emissions test.
The only other significant mechanical upgrade is the addition of speed-sensitive steering. In theory, this will deliver the best of both worlds: less effort at parking speeds and more feedback when pressing on. In practice there are few power steering solutions that improve upon a traditional hydraulically-assisted rack, so the jury’s out for now.

Tail lights get an LED upgrade
Cosmetically, the changes for ’06 are pretty low key, too. Outside, the front grille has been positioned lower, the scallops ahead of the front wheels are deeper and there are new light bi-xenon lamps up front and LED units at the rear. The cabin, which most think is the 350Z’s weakest point, has also received a mild tweak including new instruments, a dash of extra soft-touch plastics and the odd slice of aluminium.

Better plastic, more aluminium, but still a tacky steering wheel
In short, minor upgrades for an already excellent all-round package. Sales of the revised 350Z start in April next year. Prices are expected to increase from the current £25,500 starting point, but we don’t doubt it will remain a conspicuous bargain.
