Nissan wheels out supercharged 350Z

Only a concept, for now…
Nissan has gone public with images and full technical specifications for the upcoming 350Z GT-S concept. Based on the standard 350Z and produced in the UK, Nissan says the 375bhp coupe is a ‘Club Special’ built for the hill climb at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed (starts Friday, folks) that’s still comfortable enough to use as a daily driver. The Japanese car maker has also dropped some fairly unsubtle hints that the one-off supercharged coupe could make series production…

GT-S concept packs 375bhp and 313lb/ft
As well as that healthy power boost, the Novidem-supplied supercharger beefs up the 3.5-litre V6’s torque output to a rather rude 313lb/ft (the stock Z cranks out 260lb/ft). That’s enough to drag the GT-S to 60mph in around 4.8 seconds and to slice 2.5 seconds off the standard 350Z’s zero-to-100mph time.
But while we’d never say no to more power, it’s the attention to detail that has apparently been paid to the GT-S’s chassis that’s most promising. Most significantly, Nissan has worked with specialists from Bilstein to tune the car’s chassis for crumbling British ‘B’ roads. As ever, wider rims and boots complete the uprated chassis package. Further adding to the GT-S’s road car credentials, Nissan reckons it’s actually more refined than the standard Z thanks to a new NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) pack, despite a fruitier exhaust that includes a by-pass valve for an amped up engine note.

Designed and built in the UK, the GT-S might make it into production as a dealer option
As project leader Steve Robbins says, “We could have produced a balls-out racer with huge power outputs and very little suspension movement. But while this would have created a superb racer, it would have been virtually unusable on the road. Instead we approached the GT-S from an engineering stand-point with a view to creating a 350Z that provides more of everything… performance, handling, looks, comfort and excitement.”
The GT-S also gets a Strosek-developed aero kit which is claimed to improve front and rear downforce levels, though we’d be surprised if the standard 350Z actually produces negative lift with standard body trim. Whatever, Nissan says the car has been developed as a series of stand alone ‘packs’ - an engine pack, a suspension pack and an aero pack – suggesting that each may be made available separately to 350Z buyers.

Whether the sum total of the GT-S, or any of its constituent parts, will actually see the inside of your local Nissan dealer, however, has yet to be determined. For now, Nissan has only provided this rather cheesy, self-referential teaser:
“So will the GT-S ultimately become more than a weekend project by a group of mavericks? Nissan is saying nothing officially, though insiders point to its appearance at Goodwood as a sign the company is giving the GT-S concept serious consideration.”
