Four-wheel drive Fiat gets funky
This is the new Fiat Panda Cross. A funky four-wheel drive version of your favourite friendly Fiat. Of course, Fiat will already flog you the Panda 4x4, so is the Panda Cross more style statement than first and foremost functional?

Not your average SUV
Well, the Panda Cross is at least the real four-wheel drive deal, unlike VW’s phoney 4x4, the front-wheel-drive-only Polo Dune. But it does rehash the usual chunky plastic bodykit formula that’s become default when adding an off-road variant to a model range.
Still, the Panda Cross does bring a number of bone fide technical tweaks compared with the existing 4x4 version. For starters, the 4x4’s pitiful 60bhp 1.2-litre lump is replaced by a slightly gutsier 70bhp, 75lb/ft 1.3-litre diesel engine (the only engine option for the Cross). But it’s still probably best not to dwell on the glacial 18 seconds to 62mph and 94mph vmax performance numbers.

The Panda Cross packs 70bhp of bad-assed diesel grunt
Fiat has also cranked up the ride height in the name of improving off-road ability. For the record, the Cross boasts approach, departure and camber angles of 26, 44 and 23 degrees respectively. As for off-road traction, the dual-differential, viscous-joint permanent four-wheel drive system shoves 98 per cent of torque to the front wheels under normal conditions. But an electronic differential lock can be activated at speeds below 30kph. delivering genuine mud-pluggability.
Euro prices will start at around €16,750 with sales kicking off in January 2006. No news yet on UK pricing or availability.
