Peugeot’s new badge-engineered ute

Mitsubishi by another name
Feeling tired and listless? Simply can’t be bothered to engineer your own mid-sized SUV? Then come on down to Mistsubishi Motors, we’ll do the job for you…This, allegedly, is the process that has brought us the new Peugeot 4007. It’s little more than a Mitsubishi Outlander with a nose job…

Peugeot has yet to expose the 4007’s Mitsubishi-made interior
From the A-pillar back, the bodywork and glasshouse of Pug’s new ute are identical to its Mitsubishi progenitor. Still, with the most monumental take to date on Peugeot’s gaping font grille treatment, it is at least, er, imposing.
What’s more, power is delivered by bona fide PSA technology. The Outlander’s 138bhp 2.0-litre diesel lump is defenestrated in favour of the Frech outfit’s familiar 2.2-litre oil burner (co-developed by PSA and Ford) in 156bhp / 280lb/ft trim. The engine is capable of running on a mixture of up to 30 per cent biodiesel without modifications. As yet, Peugeot has not released details of any petrol-powered variants.

As for the drivetrain, a six-speed manual box is standard, while the all-wheel-drive system sends torque to the front wheels by default and channels power rearward as conditions require. Size-wise, the 4007 clocks in at 4.64 metres and is a full seven-seater. To put that into context, the Land Rover Freelander consumes 4.45 metres of road space, while a VW Toureg weighs in at 4.75 metres.
Mitsubishi will crank out 30,000 units a year for PSA (a Citroen variant is also on the cards) from one of its Japanese manufacturing facilities. UK sales start in September ’07 at a whisker under £20k.
