Or so they claim

Impressive proof of the 911 GT2’s road-racing prowess? Or just Weissach waving its willy? Whatever, Porsche claims the new 997-vintage GT2 can bang in a lap of the Nurburgring in just 7 minutes and 32 seconds. That, allegedly, is over 20 seconds quicker than a Fezza F430…

The timings come from a leaked copy of the GT2’s upcoming official brochure. Of course, Nurburgring laps times are a constant source of debate and skulduggery. Variable conditions, the skill of the wheelman in question and perhaps the odd underhand chassis tweak all play a part in delivering quick laps on the infamous German circuit.

As a in-house Porsche effort, rather than an independently achieved time, the GT2’s alleged 7m32s lap must be treated as unconfirmed. But if it is true, it certainly leaves the car rubbing shoulders with some extremely highfalutin company. For the record, here are some selected comparison times compiled from around ye olde interweb:

6:55 - Radical SR8, 360hp / 650kg
7:28 - Porsche Carrera GT, 612hp / 1475kg (one Walther Roehrl at the helm)
7:32 - Pagani Zonda F, 650hp / 1230kg (manufacturer claim)
7:32 - Porsche 997 GT2, 530hp / 1440kg (manufacturer claim)
7:40 - Bugatti 16/4 Veyron, 1001hp / 1980kg (conducted by Wheels mag, Australia)
7:40 - Lambo. Murcielago LP640, 640hp / 1655kg (Lambo test driver Giorgio Sanna)
7:42 - Porsche 997 GT3 RS, 415hp / 1420kg (manufacturer claim)
7:50 - BMW E46 M3 CSL, 360hp / 1421kg
7:52 - Lamborghini Gallardo E-gear, 493hp / 1496kg
7:55 - Ferrari F430 F1, 490hp / 1493kg
8:05 - Porsche 997 Carrera S, 355hp / 1461kg
8:13 - BMW M5 (E60), 507hp / 1844kg

Anywho, if nothing else it looks like the GT2 makes extremely efficient use of its 530hp. Indeed, it makes the Carrera GT carbon-fibre, mega-buck special look almost silly.
