Production Challenger will be dead ringer for Detroit concept

Chrysler commits to keep the faith
The Dodge Challenger production car will be virtually identical to the concept car that was so rapturously received by punters and press alike at the Detroit show earlier this year. So says Chrysler bigwig Tom Tremont. “You’re not going to be able to tell the difference. We’re going to keep the Challenger as close as we can to the concept,” quoth he.
As we explained earlier this month, the Challenger will be built on the Chrysler LY platform, a development of the LX architecture and in turn based on the mid-90s W210-vintage Mercedes E-Class. So, that’s a high quality, Merc-engineered rear-drive chassis, complete with fully independent suspension all round. Not a bad starting point for a new-age pony car. Engines options will be headed up by Chrysler’s 6.0-litre-plus V8 Hemi lumps.
The Challenger’s interior is also expected to keep the faith with the concept. As Alan Barrington, the concept Challenger’s interior designer told US daily Detroit News, "there’s so much passion surrounding this car, we knew if we screwed this up, we would lose a lot of fans."
The Challenger will roll out for real in 2008. No word as yet on UK availability, pricing, RHD models and all that jazz.
