Enrty-level Lambo goes hardcore, Audi R8 positioning confirmed
Great car, the Gallardo. But thanks to that four-wheel drivetrain, most think it’s a little too safe and secure to be a classic Lambo. That all-weather tackle also helps to push the car’s kerbweight over the 1,500kg mark. What we really want is an edgier, lighter, rear-wheel-drive-only Gallardo. And that’s exactly what we’re going to get, according to Lamborghini’s head Honcho Stephan Winkelmann.
Speaking to Dutch rag AutoTelegraaf, Winkelmann confirmed plans for a RWD Gallardo and also said the upcoming Gallardo-based Audi R8 will not threaten Lamborghini’s status as the flagship sportscar maker within the VW group (though, quite how that statement fits in with the million-dollar Bugatti Veyron we dare not specualte). In any case, all that suggests the R8 will be priced well below the Gallardo and may well be fitted with a more cost-effective Audi V8 powerplant, rather than the new V10 as seen in the S8 uber limo. Winkelmann was also quizzed on the status of the rumoured Lambo SUV and 2+2 coupe models but would only divulge that no final decisions had been made.
