No more radical Renaults? That seems to be the message coming from the French outfit’s new design boss Patrick Pelata. This new broom reckons even the latest Megane was unnecessarily controversial and appears to be preparing to sweep such radicalism under the carpet. Yikes.
So, what’s the problem, exactly? “There have not been enough people involved in the planning or design process,” Pelata has pontificated. The Modus, in particular, has been singled out as an example of how Renault has gone awry. “Its design is just not coherent. There are some aspects of it which are very good but it is not carried through. It is not just about design talent it is about managing product design.” A clear message then: less freedom for the firm’s designers. Good news for Renault’s medium term bottom line? Oh, probably. But for those of us who like difference for the sake of it, a worrying development.
