Scirocco, Corrado or Rivo?

Compact coupe gets rip rorting V6, out in 2008
Back in September we reported on VW’s plans to resurrect the Scirocco compact coupe. Then, the car was expected to be powered by VW’s impressive new 1.4-litre Twincharger engine. Now reports are emerging that it will boast a full range of the usual VW engine suspects, including the gutsy 3.2-litre 250bhp V6 and the utterly ubiquitous 2.0-litre FSI lump. Gearbox options will very likely include VW’s DSG twin-clutch robot box and all-wheel-drive will be on the menu, too.
Both Autoweek and Autocar have near-identical deets on the new car which is said to be styled by VW’s design boss, Murat Gunak (he of former Mercedes-Benz and, in particular, SLR fame) and will offer 2+2 seating and an aggressively low roofline. Apparently, it’s all part of VW boss Wolfgang Bernhard’s masterplan to turn VW into the premier maker of affordable performance cars following the much improved new Golf GTI, the impressive Golf R32 and recently announced Polo GTI. Unfortunately, however, it seems this strategy doesn’t stretch as far as the fab Concept R mid-engine sportster – Autoweek reports this car won’t be built.
Sales are expected to start in 2008, but it seems the classic Scirocco and more recent Corrado have been defenestrated in favour of Rivo. Classy…
