Subaru P2: Puke-tasticly quick according to Clarkson

Active diff has Big J barfing
We still can’t fathom why race and rally car specialists Prodrive chose the utterly unprepossessing Subaru R1 city car as the basis for an ultra high-performance coupe concept. But thanks to the latest episode of Top Gear, we at least now know that the Prodrive P2 is near-as-dammit as quick a Pagani Zonda. Oh, and it handles so well it’ll make you sick…
Despite the dubious merits of having Clarkson at the helm, the P2 put on quite a show. A fancy active differential (complete with yaw sensors, accelerometers, and steering and throttle angle detectors) effectively banishes all traces of understeer and lifts the P2’s skidpan Vmax from 30 mph with the active diff disabled to around 45mph. It also generates enough g-force to have Big J emptying his bowels from the wrong end on national TV. That has to be a good sign…
Meanwhile, Top Gear confirms that the anti-lag system does exactly what is says on the tin, though no details are provided other than the headline performance and power output figures: 345bhp from Subaru’s ubiquitous turbo flat-four, zero to 60mph in 3.6 seconds and a top whack of 174mph.
And if you’re wondering how the P2 fared on Top Gear’s makeshift race track, well, after a messy looking lap by the Stig it turned in a time of 1:24.3, just half a second slower than a Pagani Zonda. Finally and for the record, Top Gear confirmed that Prodrive has absolutely no plans to put the P2 into production. It remains no more than a showcase for the company’s engineering skills.
