Techart preps cracking Cayman

Big-bore 385bhp beast
A classic 295bhp 3.4-litre flat-six ought to be enough for a £43k
mid-engined sports car. But thanks to a seriously capable chassis,
familiarity with the Cayman almost breeds contempt for that sort of
power. It could easily cope with a lot more grunt. Verily, that’s exactly
what tuning outfit TechArt has given it, courtesy of a big-bore engine
conversion. And if you reckon the Cayman S’s low key road presence is
rather retiring for your taste, point your peepers at the TechArt
GTsport’s GT3-busting body kit…
Granted, the GTsport ain’t exactly subtle. But TechArt hasn’t cut corners in upping the Cayman’s ampage to fully 385bhp and 300lb/ft (the latter represents a boost of nearly 50lb/ft over the stock ‘S’ model). Instead of simply strapping on a blower or two, the Cayman S’s 3.4-litre lump has been treated to 99mm cylinder bores and larger pistons, bringing the overall displacement to 3,824cc. Other performance enhancing extras include uprated camshafts, a new crankshaft, a modified intake system and the obligatory stainless steel exhaust piping. TechArt is claiming a zero to 62mph sprint of 4.9 seconds and a Vmax of 177mph, both of which sound extremely conservative if the GTsport really does kick out 385bhp (though gearing and aero efficiency factors might explain the relatively modest increase in top speed).
Heading up the list of chassis tweaks, meanwhile, is TechArt’s own VarioPlus coil-over spring and damper kit which is compatible with Porsche’s PASM active damper system where fitted. Wheels and tyres are massive 20-inch items all round, with 235/30 section boots up front and insanely low profile 305/25 units on the back.
