Tesco 99 tops high-octane petrol pow-wow

Every little helps
Our, ahem, colleagues over at Pistonheads.com have published the results of an impressively comprehensive survey of the relative merits of the high octane petrol products. Thorney Motorsport spent seven months spanking a BMW M3 CSL and Toyota MR2 juiced up with various fuels on their new dyno Milton Keynes…
Apparently, the test took seven months largely because Thorney Motorsport went to great lengths to ensure the competing fuels were tested under consistent ambient and atmospheric conditions. Incredibly, when fuelled with Tesco’s 99 octane petrol, the M3 CSL cranked out an extra 42bhp, while the 2.0-litre MR2 produced an additional 8.1bhp. It’s the claimed the test is the first of its kind in the UK, although Evo magazine conducted a similar, if less exhaustive, test a few months ago.
It’s also worth noting that the figures quoted are all flywheel bhp. And that involves the black art of guestimating drivetrain friction and inertia losses. Rear-wheel horsepower results are much more reliable. Whatever, for the record Tesco 99 topped the table for both cars, while Shell’s 97 octane Optimax and BP’s Ultimate offer were impossible to separate and only slightly behind. Since the test was conducted Shell has begun rolling out V-Power, its own 99 octane fuel. Hop on over to Pistonheads for the full story.
