TVR to shut Blackpool factory, future uncertain

British sports car maker on the ropes
We knew things weren’t exactly rosy over at TVR’s Bispham, Blackpool facility. But we didn’t realise quite how bad the situation had become. Until yesterday, that is. TVR announced that 71 workers, representing around a quarter of its current workforce, were being laid off with immediate effect. But the much more worrying news is that the factory itself will be closed within the next six months, with the remaining workers offered voluntary redundancy…

TVR’s Bispham, Blackpool facility. After 30 years, the firm is moving out.
For now, the official line is that TVR’s Russian owner, Nikolai Smolensky, is determined that the company will live on, with manufacturing relocated to new and as yet unknown premises. While it’s thought that TVR’s main facility will remain in the UK (though probably not in Blackpool), TVR has indicated that some subassembly production could be outsourced overseas.
The decision follows a period of poor sales for the sports car outfit. According to a company spokesman, “TVR has had a long winter. People normally start to get interested in cars before this time of year.” However, sales have simply failed to pick up. "We’re currently making 10 cars a week."
Needless to say, several workers have spoken out about what they regard as shoddy treatment by management. “We have had no official explanation other than a letter we received whilst we were on our Easter break. This is absolutely no way to treat a loyal workforce,” one such aggrieved panel beating Blackpudlian told local rag Blackpool Today.
