Two turbos for 3

Sequential blowers for baby Bimmer
BMW’s new magnesium alloy straight six engine, as found in the latest 3 Series, is a damn fine thing by any metric. But apparently it’s not enough: Autocar Magazine reports that the power merchants in Munich are planning to bolt on a pair of turbos.
The inevitably mind-bending power output aside (Autocar reckons the the unit will be good for an M3-humbling 330bhp), you might be wondering what the devil BMW is doing bolting turbos onto to a petrol engine. The firm has recently made it clear it prefers doing it the hard way with naturally aspirated engines. Both the new V10 M5 and upcoming V8 M3 spurn forced induction of any kind. That’s in contrast to the quick-fix turbos and superchargers typically employed on uber-saloons from the likes of Mercedes Benz and Audi. And there’s no doubting the superior control and throttle response of a naturally aspirated lump. With that in mind, it’s not surprising the new power plant implements a sequential turbo configuration - one for low engine speeds and another to take over at the business end of the rev range. Anyway, we look forward to seeing whether BMW’s first modern turbo mill can once again prove it builds engines better than anyone else.
