Power to the Volk
Nineteen hundred and seventy-seven. The year the first fibre-optic cable was used for telephone communications, the Centenary Test twixt Aus and England was held at Melbourne Cricket Ground and France performed its final execution by guillotine… Oh, and the year the VW Golf GTI was first offered in Blighty. With the GTI’s 30th anniversary arriving shortly, what better excuse to wheel out a special edition Golf to cash in on all that nostalgic brand equity. Enter the Golf GTI Edition 30, complete with a 227bhp power upgrade, big rims and all that jazz…

The Edition 30 is available in six colours including Candy White and Tornado Red
Of course, with a forced-induction motor like the current Golf GTI, turning up the wick on the blowers is a relatively simple procedure. But VW has at least bolted on a full styling package. Cosmetic addenda include body-coloured skirts, a new chin spoiler and a tweaked rear bumper. The Edition 30’s exterior mods are rounded out with a set of sexy ‘Pescara’ 18-inch alloys - the design of which BBS fans will find familiar. It’s a dead ringer for BBS’s CH wheel.
As for interior Edition 30 accoutrements, special seat cloth, silver ‘Edition 30’ logoed sill plates and the return of the golf-ball gear knob is your lot. Available with both manual and dual-clutch DSG boxes, VW has not provided any details regarding the car’s chassis settings. Standard Golf GTI suspension, therefore, is the most likely candidate.
Performance-wise, the massaged four-pot turbo mill delivers a zero-to-62mph sprint of 6.8 seconds for the manual model (the DSG shaves two tenths off that time) and a Vmax of 150mph.
Pricing kicks off at £22,000 for the manual three-door, with the DSG box adding £1,330 and a pair of additional door yours for a piffling £500. The original GTI, for the record, entered VW’s 1977 price list at just £5,217. On sale from early January, just 1,500 Edition 30s will be produced.
