V8 poke for new Volvo S80

Range-topping Swede to debut at the Geneva show
While Jaguar slowly but surely crumbles, another part of Ford’s Premier Automotive Group is looking stonger by the day. Volvo is currently tooling up to release a new flagship S80 saloon at the Geneva in March. Sleeker styling and possibly a new V8 lump are likely highlights.
As the spy shot shown here demonstrates, Volvo’s latest represents another step in the company’s journey from boxy to beautiful. Thanks to the large front overhang, it also proves that the new S80 retains a fundamentally front-wheel drive architecture. Consequently, we doubt the suggestion from Detroit News that Volvo is considering dropping Jaguar’s 4.4-litre V8 into the new S80. Why re-engineer the Jag lump for a transverse installation when Volvo already has that Yamaha-sourced V8 doing decent service in the XC90?
The new S80 is expected to go on sale in 2006 following its Geneva debut.
