VW launches 300bhp Passat R36

TT to follow?
Volkswagen has taken the wraps off a new high performance variant of
the mid-sized Passat saloon. The Passat R36 packs 296bhp from a new
3.6-litre FSI V6. That’s enough to ensure this is not only the quickest
Passat ever, but also the fastest estate car the company has ever
wheeled out. OK, the historical competition isn’t exactly hot on either
count. But with a zero-to-62mph capability of 5.6 clicks, the R36
certainly shifts. But perhaps more intriguingly, it opens the way for a
300-brake TT R36…
Shades of Audi R8 in them there air intakes?
As for engine specifics, VW has yet to reveal full technical details. But given the current Passat’s tranverse front-drive architecture, the smart money is on the new engine being a bored out version of the familiar narrow-angle V6. The very same lump that powers the current range-topping TT coupe and cab, albeit in 3.2-litre 240bhp-ish tune.
Whatever, the Passat R36 will ship as standard with both VW’s excellent dual-clutch DSG robot-manual gearbox and all-wheel drive. Estate and saloon body styles will be on offer.
The R36 makes its public debut at the Essen Motorshow on November 30th. Prices will be announced closer to the UK launch in 2007. That is all.
