VW squeezes 200bhp from 1.4 litres

Big poke from puny powerplant
V-Dub’s 1.4-litre Twincharger engine is already an extremely impressive unit. Courtesy of both turbo and superchargers, the 1.4-litre poweplant is available in both 140bhp and 170bhp trim and combines the sort of lag-free grunt normally reserved for much larger lumps with relatively parsimonious petrol consumption. To coincide with the UK launch of the TwinCharger (known as TSI in VW model parlance and now available in the Golf, Golf Plus and Touran), VW has revealed that an even more powerful 200bhp variant is possible…
Dr Hermann Middendorf, the German outfit’s head engine honcho, told UK rag WhatCar that the 200bhp Twincharger is already being tested, though he declined to reveal precisely which models the new unit will find its way into. However, the engine’s relative lack of refinement makes it a non-starter for Audi’s more upmarket model range. The puny-sounding 1.4-litre capacity might also be a hard sell in the performance hatchback market, so all bets are off regarding a GTI-badged Twincharger Golf. However, with the Polo pencilled in to receive the Twincharger later this year, there’s obvious potential for a seriously quick pocket rocket that also delivers sensible fuel economy.
For now, the existing Twincharger range is reserved for VW-branded cars, with the Eos and Passat also due to receive it later this year.
